Music icon James “Jamesie” Brewster Dies
We are said to announce the passing of Quelbe music icon James “Jamesie” Brewster.
Brewster has performed throughout the region and the world – making multiple trips to Denmark where he recorded two albums in collaboration with a Danish band. Jamesie headed up both Jamesie and the Happy Seven and Jamesie and the All-Star bands.
Born on St. Croix in 1929, Brewster has said he made his first guitar out of a sardine can and a piece of wood. He became known for his lively and humorous stage presence during his 50 years as a performer. Many considered him the King of Scratch Band music. In 2002, Brewster was honored at a Summit of Tradition Bearers for his lifetime contributions to the Virgin Island ‘s musical heritage. A documentary was made about Brewster in 2006 – The Jamesie Project, which followed him performing in both the United States and Europe.
