Michael Jordan ‘pained and plain angry’ over George Floyd’s death, joins call for change
Charlotte Hornets owner and Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan joined the chorus of athletes, coaches and executives expressing their grief and outrage over the death of George Floyd.
“I am deeply saddened, truly pained and plain angry,” Jordan said in a statement Sunday. “… I stand with those who are calling out the ingrained racism and violence toward people of color in our country. We have had enough.”
Floyd, a black man, died last week in Minneapolis after Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, kneeled on his neck for more than eight minutes. Chauvin was fired Tuesday and charged Friday with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Three other officers were also fired but have not been charged.
Floyd’s death has sparked protests in cities across the United States.
“I don’t have the answers, but our collective voices show strength and the inability to be divided by others,” Jordan said. “We must listen to each other, show compassion and empathy and never turn our backs on senseless brutality. We need to continue peaceful expressions against injustice and demand accountability. Our unified voice needs to put pressure on our leaders to change our laws, or else we need to use our vote to create systemic change. Every one of us needs to be part of the solution, and we must work together to ensure justice for all.”
Jordan was joined Sunday by the LA Clippers Doc Rivers and the Phoenix Suns Monty Williams, two black coaches who stressed the urgent need for immediate change.
“We have allowed too many tragedies to pass in vain,” Rivers said in a statement. “This isn’t an African-American issue. This is a human issue. Our society must start getting comfortable with the uncomfortable conversation and do the right thing. Silence and inactivity are not acceptable anymore. Now is the time to speak.”
Williams, whose wife died in a car crash four years ago, said he is familiar with the feeling of sudden, tragic loss.
“I pray for those we have lost but more personally for those who have lost — the families of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and so many before you,” he said in a statement, referring also to the high-profile shooting deaths of two black Americans in recent months. “I know how it feels to get that call that someone you love isn’t coming home. The pit in your stomach. The unequivocal feeling of helplessness. Dropping to your knees and imploring God ‘why?’
“I feel your pain and can truly sympathize and empathize. I wish no one would ever have to receive that call again.”
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban attended a prayer vigil on Sunday in Dallas along with several Mavericks players, including Justin Jackson. Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James shared videos on social media of peaceful protests in Denver and Washington D.C.
Protests erupted for sixth day across the US over the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, at the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
At least 40 cities imposed curfews but most were broken, and National Guard members have been activated in at least 23 states and Washington, DC.
One former officer who was seen with his knee on Floyd’s neck was charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter, but protesters say the charge isn’t harsh enough, and are demanding charges for the other officers involved.
May 25, 2020, George Floyd, an African American man, died in Powderhorn,a neighborhood south of downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. While Floyd was handcuffed and lying face down on a city street during an arrest, Derek Chauvin, a white Minneapolis police officer, kept his knee on the right side of Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds; according to the criminal complaint against Chauvin, 2 minutes and 53 seconds of that time occurred after Floyd became unresponsive. Officers Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng, and Thomas K. Lane participated in Floyd’s arrest, with Kueng holding Floyd’s back, Lane holding his legs, and Thao looking on as he stood nearby.Preliminary results from the official autopsy found no indication that Floyd died of strangulation or traumatic asphyxia, but that the combined effects of being restrained, underlying health conditions, including coronary artery disease and hypertensive heart disease , and potential intoxicants in his system likely contributed to his death.Attorneys for Floyd’s family announced that they have requested an independent autopsy.
The arrest was made after Floyd was accused of using a counterfeit $20 bill at a deli. Police said Floyd physically resisted arrest.According to NewsHub, a security camera from a nearby business did not show Floyd resisting. However, the criminal complaint filed later stated Floyd “did not voluntarily get in the car and struggled with the officers, intentionally falling down, saying he was not going in the car, and refusing to stand still” based on body cameras worn by Kueng and Lane.Several bystanders recorded the event on their smartphones, with one video showing Floyd repeating “Please”, “I can’t breathe”, “Mama”, and “Don’t kill me” being widely circulated on social media platforms and broadcast by the media. All four officers were fired the next day.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is conducting a federal civil rights investigation into the incident at the request of the Minneapolis Police Department. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is also investigating possible violations of Minnesota statutes. On May 29, Chauvin was charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter for Floyd’s death, with Hennepin County attorney Michael O. Freeman saying he anticipated charges to be brought against the other three officers at the scene.
After Floyd’s death, demonstrations and protest in the Minneapolis Saint Paul area were initially peaceful on May 26, but later that day became violent as windows were smashed at a police precinct, two stores were set on fire, and many stores were looted and damaged. Some demonstrators skirmished with police, who fired tear gas and rubber bullets. Additional protests developed in over 1oo cities throughout all 50 states in the United States, as well as internationally. Floyd’s death has been compared to the 2014 death of Eric Gardner. Garner, also an unarmed black man, repeated “I can’t breathe” eleven times after being placed in a choke hole by a New York police officer during an arrest in Staten Island.
