By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) Belize recently celebrated CARDI Day 2023 with two events that showcased the importance of agriculture for the country.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE), on December 5, young people learned about various agricultural practices from a team of experts. The topics covered harvest and storage of peanuts, management fertility of hot pepper plants, proper storage of seeds and grains, and growing sweet pepper successfully.

On December 6, with the support of the European Union-funded regional coconut project, CARDI partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in organizing a National Coconut Stakeholder Seminar and Fair in Central Farm.

MAFSE said the seminar aimed to advance Belize’s coconut industry by launching ‘One Country One Priority Product’ – a five-year programme initiated by FAO. The programme focuses on special agricultural commodities that can help transform the agrifood systems into more resilient and sustainable ones.
