Agriculture Minister Supports Blue Transformation in Region

by newspro March 20, 2024
written by newspro

Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Hon. Floyd Green, has reiterated his continued support for the implementation of the Blue Transformation approach in the Region.

Blue Transformation proposes sustainable aquaculture production, effective fisheries management, and improved value chains.

Minister Green, who was speaking on March 19 at the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) four-day regional conference, in Guyana, said priority must be given to diversifying the livelihoods of small-scale fishers and fish farmers.

“It is the only thing that can be done to reduce overfishing and support ecosystem management efforts throughout the region. In Jamaica, we are implementing a fisheries development programme that has two components – the promotion of community-based climate resilience and the modernisation of licensing and registration systems,” the Minister said.

“As such, we are using the technology to develop what we call Irie Fins, a Jamaican fisheries aquaculture information system where our fishers, fish farmers and vessels can register using their mobile devices,” he added.

Mr. Green also highlighted strategies being used in Jamaica to increase yields in aquaculture and encourage diversity among artisanal fishers.

“We are driving the development of our first Aquaculture Agro Park to really drive production across aquaculture. We are looking at our community-based climate resilience models to promote diversification of the income component of our fisheries development programme. We are also helping our small artisanal fisheries to diversify to go into sea moss production, ecotourism and ornamental fish development,” the Minister said.

“Priority must be given to the diversification of the livelihood of small fishers and fish farmers. This is the only thing that can be done to reduce the occurrence of overfishing and to support ecosystem management efforts across the region,” he argued.

This Ministerial Roundtable was focused on the urgent matter of ‘Advancing fisheries and aquaculture towards sustainability under the Blue Transformation approach’.

The hybrid conference is being held within the framework of the 38th FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean from March 18 to 21.

The event is hosting ministers, vice ministers, and authorities from Dominica, Jamaica, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Meanwhile, Minister Green, who also chairs the Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission, said the implementation of effective strategies is critical to tackling Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing.

“There can be no blue transformation if we don’t tackle IUU fishing, including continuing to strengthen intraregional fisheries management systems at national subregional and intraregional levels,” he said.

To strengthen existing efforts, the Minister also called for the FAO to support the development and improvement of legislation and policies, including those that relate to the control and surveillance to combat IUU fishing.

“It is critical that we develop intraregional systems on traceability. We must cut out the market on illegal fishing, which poses a serious threat to sustainability, safety and national security,” Mr. Green said.

With 85 million people depending on aquatic foods for their livelihoods, these resources are vital to Latin America and the Caribbean’s social, economic, and nutritional well-being.

Blue Transformation is an approach aimed at redefining the region’s relationship with aquatic foods and proposes a vision of sustainable aquaculture production, effective fisheries management, and improved value chains.

The goal is to achieve more equitable, resilient, and sustainable food systems.

Humanity First USA (HFUSA) is launching its annual Fast2Feed campaign during the month of Ramadan this year from March 12th, 2024 through April 10th, 2024.

CHANTILLY, VA, UNITED STATES, March 17, 2024 /EINPresswire.com/ — Humanity First USA (HFUSA) is launching its annual Fast2Feed campaign during the month of Ramadan this year from March 12th, 2024 through April 10th, 2024.

Hunger among Americans is real. According to the US Department of Agriculture, 13% or 44.2 million people in the United States, including 13 million children, are battling hunger and feeling food insecure as of 2022.

By fasting for over 12 hours a day in this month, all Muslims get a small taste of hunger and the pain endured by people with little or no food to eat. But unlike many who enjoy their favorite foods after breaking their fast in the evening, millions do not have the luxury of even one full meal a day.

The Fast2Feed campaign invites you to “Donate a Lunch”: make a donation worth the value of one meal to feed a hungry stomach. Supporters from any faith can experience a day of fasting or skip a meal and donate the cost of that meal to feed children, adults, and elders who are suffering because of hunger in America.

Funds from donating your lunch will support HFUSA’s food and meal distribution sites across the U.S. With a vision to make America hunger-free, the Humanity First USA Food Security program seeks to reduce hunger and food waste, provide food to our communities, and raise awareness.

“Help us beat hunger by donating your lunch to the Fast2Feed campaign. If you can feed 100 people or if you can help to feed just 1 person, your action can make all the difference to someone experiencing hunger.” Tahir Soofi, Director of HFUSA Food Security.

Our goal is to raise $100,000 and donations can be made at https://humanityfirstusa.org/fast2feed/.

Beloved music retailer with 45 US stores closing last location in state – and more are on the chopping block nationwide

written by newspro

IT is a sad day for musicians in one state as the last location of one trade store is closing down for good.

Sam Ash Music in New Haven, Connecticut, is the last store of its name in the state, and come late May, it will shutter its doors for the last time.

The last Sam Ash music store in Connecticut is set to close in late May as it is currently running storewide sales on musical instruments and equipment

Eric D’Eugenio confirmed with CT Insider that the location would be closing in the Spring.

While the corporate office did not give a reason as to why the location was closing, D’Eugenio was able to shed some light on the direction of the company.

He said that multiple other locations across the country are expected to close this coming year.

An employee of a Florida Sam Ash location that has recently announced its closure revealed that the company plans to close 18 stores total, as reported by The Patch.

The company was founded in Brooklyn, New York in 1924, eventually growing to 45 locations in 16 states; soon to be only 15.

As the location prepares to close, they are running storewide sales, that have left some customers wanting.

“I was a musician — not anymore. I still like to go in and look,” explained Bob Mansfield.

“But they don’t have much.”

Most items are currently only marked down by 5%, with some more specialized items reduced by up to 20%.

Patrons of the store are sad to see it go, wondering where they will go now that their local store will be gone.

“I think it sucks,” said Mike Merrill, who had just bought an acoustic guitar just two weeks prior, reported the New Haven Register.

Merill is unsure where he will go to now, as physically testing out his instrument before buying it is integral to his creative process.

“If I’m going to buy an amp, I want to be able to play through it,” he said.

Jack Libero of Goldie & Libro’s, who is active in the local music scene is devastated to see the establishment close.

“It’s a situation where I don’t think it’s going to get better. I think it’s just the beginning,” he said of music shops closing down.

“It’s the effect of the economy, the effect of online buying,” said Libero, whose own establishment has only survived by selling through school systems and joining the nationwide Music & Arts conglomerate.

Jimmy Butler Rocks Emo Hairdo For Fall Out Boy Music Video

by newspro February 28, 2024
written by newspro

Emo Jimmy Butler is back in a big way — the Miami Heat star is heavily featured in Fall Out Boy’s latest music video … playing the role of a dancing cowboy!!

Butler — who looked more like Jimmy Heat World during Miami’s media day thanks to his hilarious haircut — brought the look back in the visuals for “So Much (For) Stardust,” which show him grooving while rocking an all-purple, bedazzled look.

The first half of the video is all about Butler … before his character shakes a magic 8 ball and the band’s bassist, Pete Wentz, pops out in a beige costume that rivals the hooper’s ensemble.

Fans — who are cleverly dubbing Butler “Heat Wentz” — are loving the project … praising the two for movin’ and groovin’ together in the latter half of the song.

The cowboy part is natural for Jimmy — especially considering he’s been open about his love for blaring country music and his plans to drop his own album.

When he spoke with reporters at media day … he explained he wanted to be “one with my emotional state,” but he quickly switched back to his regular cut shortly after.

The emo cut might have been short-lived… but thanks to the music video, it now lives forever in music history.
